True and False: Titanic History (Page 13)
What was Titanic? R.M.S Titanic (aka Royal Mail Steamer/Steamship) Titanic was an ocean liner that sailed from April 10th 1912 at Southampton, England to what was intended to be New York City, but sank on April 14/15th 1912. She was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was intended to be part of a trio of sister ships for White Star Line. Myth #13: Thomas Andrews Designed Titanic? Recent documentaries have tossed this claim in pretty much by default. It was something I'd also accepted as fact given I was still learning about the ship as a kid. The fact is, no he didn't. 1. In fact, Alexander Carlisle and Lord Pirrie designed Titanic and Thomas Andrews basically oversaw it and took over once Carlile left. 2. This isn't to say Andrews had no impact on the construction. He did take notes as they went along to probably take them into account for Britannic's construction. 3. He was certainly helpful during the sinking though, confirming the ship's damage and navigating its corridors. This may have been where the claim stemmed from in the first place.
